Erland Josephson Bio

Erland Josephson is best known as an actor. He has starred in many films under the direction of Ingmar Bergman and is perhaps most familiar for his portrayals of central figures in Scenes from a Marriage and Fanny and Alexander. He has also been a premier stage actor for more than half a century and recently starred in Bergman productions of plays by Strindberg and Schiller at his home theater, Dramaten in Stockholm, where he once served as the director. He has performed in English in productions by Peter Brooks and films by Andrei Tarkowsky and has made many Italian films. His most recent acting project was a reprise of the role of Johan in Saraband, the continuation of Scenes from a Marriage, filmed under Ingmar Bergman in 2003. Less well known in the English-speaking world is that Josephson has also written eight novels and several books of memoirs. The excerpt that follows is from the first of his novels to be translated into English (1995, paperback reprint 2001; first published in 1957), about the everyday anti-Semitism of postwar Stockholm.
